Rescue Efforts Underway as Death Toll Rises

Taipei, April 3, 2024 (Updated 12:26 PM IST): A powerful earthquake struck the eastern coast of Taiwan early Tuesday morning, causing widespread damage and triggering a massive rescue operation.

According to the Central Weather Bureau, the 7.2 magnitude earthquake occurred at 7:58 AM at a depth of 155 kilometers. The epicenter was located near Hualien City, which suffered the brunt of the impact.

The quake has resulted in the tragic loss of life, with more than 700 people confirmed dead. Numerous buildings have collapsed, roads have been blocked, and power outages have affected vast areas.

Prime Minister Su Tseng-chang has expressed his deepest condolences to the victims and their families. He has emphasized that the government is doing everything in its power to provide relief and assistance.

Rescue teams are working tirelessly to search for survivors trapped in the rubble. Hospitals are overwhelmed with the influx of injured patients.

The earthquake has also caused significant damage to infrastructure. The Taiwan High Speed Rail has suspended services, and flights at Taipei Songshan Airport have been canceled.

International aid organizations are mobilizing to provide support to Taiwan in the aftermath of the disaster.
